Chances are the realm of people who agree with you on your issue is a lot larger than your current list of supporters.
So how do you find these people? Start with your current supporter list. How much do you know about the people who already agree with you? These folks are your best connection to expand your network of supporters.
The tools below may provide you with some additional insight into shared characteristics of your current supporters. Jot down these shared characteristics in the target audience section of your outreach plan. After you’ve finished your planning – you can work with current supporters to amplify your message. And you can use what you’ve learned to recruit more advocates.

Here are some tools that you can use to learn more about your supporters. You want to keep your current supporters. Their data is valuable to you (and to others) so do your due diligence before using any of these tools to ensure the privacy of your lists are protected. - Paid List Enhancement: Companies can provide you more information on your supporters. Submit your supporter list to “enhance” the data with all kinds of information – income, housing status, hobbies, purchase history, voter frequency, etc. Check the privacy statement for any company to ensure you are treating your supporter’s data with caution.
- Website Analytics: Find out who is visiting your website. You probably already have one of these tools loaded in to your website.
- Social Media Audience Insights & Lookalikes: Find out more about who already connects with you on social media. You can review basic info on who is already connected with your social media properties. You can also upload your supporter lists for “lookalike” targeting. Again, privacy is a concern. Do your due diligence on the platforms before handing over supporter lists:
