Struggling to get attention and action on your issue?
This could be your break through year. There’s going to be a lot of attention on big political candidate campaigns. And this is the time to raise awareness.
Tip #1: Get Ready!
I know. Duh. But really, now’s the time to get ready. Water managers in California learned the hard way that getting people’s attention during election years is critical.
Depending on where you live, you may or may not recall that California is a big state with MAJOR water issues. The state suffered a drought in 2007 – 2009 and another one 2011-2016. These droughts also covered a few presidential election cycles.
Researchers found that the more newspaper articles were written about the drought – the more Google searches there were (see graph below). They also found that increasing media coverage resulted in DECREASED water usage. Interestingly, when there was lower media coverage water use INCREASED.

Moral of the story – don’t be the California drought of 2007-2008. Get your media plan together, think through how you want to raise awareness and drive the attention of the public during election years. There’s going to be a lot of competition out there. How will your issue stand out from the crowd?
We will work through these questions over the coming weeks! Can’t wait until the next blog post? And want to start working on your advocacy campaign together? Set up a time to chat.
